Katarina Barley was elected as the SPD's top candidate in the European elections with the votes of almost all delegates. The party executive's list for the first 20 places was confirmed. All the battling candidates failed.

The Belgian Council Presidency has failed in its attempt to negotiate an agreement on Regulation 883 on social policy. This also concerns proof of social insurance for employees working abroad in the EU (A1 certificate). The European Parliament does not want to negotiate on partial aspects, but only on the entire dossier.

Alexander Stubb is ahead after the first round of the presidential election in Finland. Stubb was already Prime Minister of the country and belongs to the Christian Democratic party family. The second round of the election will take place on February 11.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann was elected as the FDP's top candidate for the European elections at a delegates' meeting. She announced she would campaign against bureaucracy in Brussels. A combat candidacy for sixth place failed.

Die belgische Ratspräsidentschaft scheitert mit dem Versuch, noch eine Einigung bei der Verordnung 883 zur Sozialpolitik auszuhandeln. Dabei geht es auch um den Nachweis der Sozialversicherung bei Arbeitnehmern, die im EU-Ausland tätig sind (A1-Bescheinigung).

Der Europäische Rechnungshof gibt der CO₂-Flottenregulierung der EU vernichtende Noten: Bis 2020 sei „der angestrebte Nutzen der Verordnung weitgehend hinfällig“ gewesen. Der Ausstoß von CO₂-Emissionen durch Neufahrzeuge sei kaum oder gar nicht zurückgegangen.
