Fusion energy: What a visit to the National Ignition Facility reveals about the path to a fusion power plant

If industry and investors have their way, the first fusion power plant will be supplying energy before the end of the 2030s. Basic researchers from the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California, are more cautious. Despite recent world records and great successes, it will be a “marathon” before fusion energy goes to grid, they predict.
