German citizens in Beijing and Shanghai can get vaccinated against COVID-19 – so the general vaccination offer for Germans in China is coming faster than in Germany itself. The Chinese government is now launching an international digital platform for the verification of tests and vaccinations.

At the EU level, discussions are underway on a supply chain law that could surpass in severity the one planned by the grand coalition in Germany. There is goodwill behind such legislation, but the possible negative consequences for poorer countries are being overlooked. It would make much more sense to directly sanction companies with inadequate social and environmental standards through an EU negative list.

Auf EU-Ebene läuft die Diskussion über ein Lieferkettengesetz, das jenes in Deutschland von der großen Koalition geplante an Schärfe übertreffen könnte. Es steckt guter Wille hinter solchen Gesetzesvorhaben, doch mögliche negativen Folgen für ärmere Länder werden dabei übersehen. Viel sinnvoller wäre die direkte Sanktionierung von Unternehmen mit mangelhaften Sozial- und Umweltstandards durch eine Negativliste der EU.

Wenn wir Europäer ein Interesse daran haben, dass die USA weiter die Aufgabe übernehmen, die Weltordnung und insbesondere China in der Balance zu halten, weil wir selbst uns das zu Recht nicht zutrauen, dann sind wir klug beraten, alles zu tun, um dem amerikanischen Präsidenten den Rücken frei zu halten. Der europäische Blick sollte sich auf eine gemeinsame Außen- und Entwicklungspolitik im Nahen und Mittleren Osten und in Afrika richten und Wege zur Finanzierung eines echten Alternativangebots für Infrastrukturinvestitionen in Zentralasien und Afrika finden, um mit der chinesischen „Seidenstraße“ den Wettbewerb aufzunehmen.

If we Europeans have an interest in the US continuing to take on the task of keeping the world order, and China in particular, in balance, because we rightly do not trust ourselves to do so, then we would be wise to do everything we can to keep the American President's back. Europe's focus should be on a common foreign and development policy in the Middle East and Africa and on finding ways to finance a genuine alternative offer of infrastructure investment in Central Asia and Africa to compete with the Chinese 'Silk Road'.

The People's Republic has overcome COVID. Many people are therefore in no hurry to be vaccinated. But China wants to vaccinate 560 million people by June. 18 to 59-year-olds first. Herd immunity is to be achieved by the end of the year. The capital Beijing, in particular, is pushing the pace.
