Wir stehen am Beginn einer neuen Ära, die geprägt ist durch die vom menschengemachten Klimawandel verursachten Schäden und Verluste. Deshalb muss die finanzielle Abdeckung von Loss and Damage auf die Agenda des kommenden Klimagipfels – oder die COP27 ist gescheitert, bevor sie begonnen hat. Der "Globale Schutzschirm gegen Klimarisiken" kann einen Beitrag leisten, aber er reicht nicht aus. Wir brauchen eine umfassendere Finanzierungsfazilität für Loss and Damage, die auf der COP27 beschlossen werden muss.

We have entered a new era of loss and damage from human-induced climate change. Therefore, finance for loss and damage must be on the agenda of the upcoming COP27 – or the climate summit will have failed before it officially starts. The Global Shield being co-developed between the G7 and V20 can certainly offer help, but it is not enough. We need a more comprehensive Finance Facility for loss and damage to be established at this COP.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz himself must be surprised that he has to face so much criticism for his visit to China. In the past, such a trip was merely routine; nowadays, it contradicts the spirit of his own "Zeitenwende" (change of times). One day before departure, the Chancellor's Office had to justify the visit and sounded surprisingly defensive. In reality, the German economy is more dependent on China than ever before.
