Über William Ruto

Africa's beacon of hope in the fight against climate change. Kenya's President William Ruto repeatedly emphasizes the opportunities of renewables for his country. By convening the first African climate summit in Nairobi in 2023, Ruto tried to sensitize the continent to the dangers of global warming. However, while heads of state and government agreed here in 2023 to achieve a capacity of 300 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy on the continent by 2030, the number of installed capacities only increased by 4.4 GW to 67 GW between 2023 and 2024. Ruto is no longer uncontroversial in his home country: while he was considered an anti-establishment candidate when he was elected in 2022, violent protests against government policy broke out in the summer.
