Probably no one knows the history of the Bundeswehr better than Sönke Neitzel. And few are more influential in the German security policy debate. His statement about a possible “last summer in peace” shaped discussions in security policy in Berlin and beyond. The historian is known for his clear words and is one of the most sought-after commentators. Before he began teaching military history in Potsdam in 2015, he was a professor at the University of Glasgow and at the London School of Economics. His work on the intercepted conversations of German prisoners of war during World War II and the 816-page work “German Warriors”, among other things, attracted a great deal of attention.
