Martin Jäger succeeded Bruno Kahl as president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) in September of this year. The new head of the German foreign intelligence service knows his way around the world’s trouble spots: Among other things, the 61-year-old was ambassador to Iraq, Afghanistan and most recently Ukraine. The diplomat is also familiar with the media world: among other things, he was press spokesperson for the then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and worked as a freelance journalist before studying.
