No decision can bypass the CSU Vice President. He wields an unusual amount of power. The man from Lower Bavaria is head of the EPP group, which has 188 of the 720 MEPs in the European Parliament, making it the largest group. Without the votes of the Christian Democrats, majorities have not been possible since the elections in June 2024. He has also been the leader of the Christian Democratic party family EPP since 2022. With Ursula von der Leyen, the EPP holds the post of Commission President and by far the most Commissioners.
