The cement sector is one of the largest CO₂ emitters in the world. Dominik von Achten wants to make Heidelberg Materials a pioneer in decarbonizing the industry. To this end, the Group was renamed from Heidelberg Cement to Heidelberg Materials in 2022 and many accused van Achten of greenwashing at the time. To produce its first net-zero cement, CO₂ from the Heidelberg Materials plant in Brevik in south-eastern Norway was separated using CCS and has been stored under the seabed since August.
