Clemens Treter has led the Goethe-Institut’s East and Central Asia region – including its Korea branch – since September 2022. Prior to that, he spent six years heading the Goethe-Institut in Beijing. Treter has held numerous roles within the organization in Munich and Taipei since 2004.

He studied Sinology, Political Science and Communication Studies in Munich and Chengdu, earned his PhD in 2002 with a dissertation on late Qing literature, and later worked as a research associate at the LMU Munich’s Institute of Asian Studies, focusing on Chinese film and literature.
