Alexander Gabuev is the director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin, where he leads a team of analysts who previously worked for the Carnegie Center in Moscow before the Russian government shut it down in 2022 after nearly three decades of operation. Gabuev is a Russian sinologist, journalist and political and security analyst. His work focuses on Russia–China relations and Russian policy toward Ukraine. He has been with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace since 2015. He began his career in 2007 at the business and political outlet Kommersant, where he worked as a senior diplomatic reporter, a member of President Dmitry Medvedev’s press corps and eventually deputy editor of the weekly Kommersant-Vlast. He studied Chinese history at Moscow State University and holds a qualification in stock markets and investment.
