Jun 13, 2009 - Shanghai, China - Mainland China s first gay pride festival wrapped up June 13, 2009 with a drag show, mock gay weddings and a hot body contest at Cotton s restaurant in Shanghai, China. A large rainbow banner hung outside the restaurant and police were placed there on standby but did not interrupt the festivities. Gay sex was illegal in China until 1997 and homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder until 2001, according to China Daily. In recent years, China has become more acceptant of gay and lesbian lifestyles, but organizers kept this year s festival, ShanghaiPRIDE, in private venues, apparently under the belief that any effort to obtain a permit for an outdoor parade or park gathering would be turned down.
