
Shifting freight transport from road to rail has been a goal of the European Union since 2001. However, the market share of road freight transport has been rising ever since and consequently, so have CO2 emissions. This trend can be reversed by combined freight transport.

Trilogues are pending on key proposals for the shift to CO2-neutral powertrains: CO2 fleet regulation for cars and vans along with combustion engine phase-out in 2035 and the development of public charging infrastructure (AFIR). Further, the Commission still intends to present three proposals that offer potential for conflict.
