Use of Artificial Intelligence

We treat artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool, not as a substitute for journalistic work. AI may support us in evaluating data, improving workflows and preparing content. Our core mission remains unchanged: Deep Journalism grounded in accuracy, independence, and responsibility to our readers.

Human Responsibility

Every item we publish is reviewed, evaluated and approved by journalists and editors. We do not publish any text, image, or video created by AI in full and unchanged. Humans retain full editorial control over all publications (the “human-in-the-loop" principle).

Opportunities & Risks

We use AI, among other things, for research, data analysis, translations, and infographics – while carefully assessing risks such as incorrect or biased results and avoiding issues related to data protection or copyright infringement.

Data Protection and Security

We do not enter sensitive information – such as unpublished reporting or internal business figures – into external AI systems.

Transparency and Labeling

We clearly label content when AI systems have substantially contributed to published text. Limited support functions such as spellcheck, basic style corrections, formatting, or layout adjustments are omitted from labeling.

No AI-generated Reportage Photography

Reportage images, portraits and event photographs are created only with real cameras. We may use AI to support graphics or symbolic images, but never to depict real people or real-world events in a way that could be mistaken for factual visual documentation.

Continuous Review and Training

We review our code of conduct at least every six months and adapt it as needed. We continuously train our teams in responsible use of AI.
