The UN, also known as the UNO (UN Organization), is an intergovernmental association of 193 states whose most important tasks are to secure world peace, uphold international law and respect human rights. The organization has been based in New York City since it was founded in 1945. The current Secretary-General of the UN is the Portuguese politician António Guterres. What is China's relationship with the UN? The Republic of China was a founding member of the UN in 1945. Today, the People's Republic is confronted with serious allegations of human rights violations in the areas of Xinjiang and Tibet. For several years, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has been demanding access to the western Chinese province of Xinjiang in order to conduct an independent investigation into the situation of the Uyghurs, a Muslim minority. China has repeatedly rejected the High Commissioner's visit, citing the current coronavirus pandemic on the one hand and the accusation that the investigation is aimed at harming China on the other.
