CO₂ removal: Why the EU is moving forward while Germany hesitates.

The EU is now demanding that oil and gas companies set up geological CO₂ storage facilities that enable CCS and CO₂ removal technologies such as direct air capture (DACCS) and bioenergy with CCS (BECCS). For the German government, however, removing CO₂ from the atmosphere is a low priority. However, the Climate Council, scientists and associations are calling for exactly this.

CO2 removals: Researchers call for EU target for negative emissions

Europe wants to be climate-neutral by 2050 and is even aiming to remove more greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than it emits. Some researchers are now calling for a specific target for 2055 and corresponding adjustments to the EU Climate Law.

EU Climate Goal 2040: debate on negative emissions in the ETS

The Fit-for-55 package for the EU Climate Goal 2030 is now law, and the debate on the Climate Goal 2040 has already begun. A highly controversial issue is the amount of CO2 removal that should be credited in the Emissions Trading System (ETS). Could these plans endanger the entire system?

The worlds largest direct air capture and storage plant that permanently removes CO from the air has opened in Iceland. Run by Swiss company Climeworks, Orca sucks carbon dioxide directly from the air and buries it as rocks deep underground, using technology from Climeworks Icelandic partner Carbfix. Orca has the capacity to remove 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere this way each year. The number equates roughly the emissions from 870 cars or 9,281 consumed barrels of oil, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency greenhouse gas calculator. The Orca plant is located in Hellisheidi, Iceland, adjacent to Icelandic energy company ON Power s geothermal power plant, and is entirely run on this rene PUBLICATIONxNOTxINxUKxFRA Copyright: xx 50626631

CDR: high hopes, hardly any clue

To meet the Paris climate targets, carbon dioxide must be removed from the atmosphere. But many carbon dioxide removal (CDR) methods are still in their infancy. Scientists are now urging policymakers to quickly devise a plan to promote negative emissions.
