China: Coal consumption falls – despite more power plants

China continues to build coal-fired power plants, but coal consumption is falling.

China continues to build new coal-fired power plants and is missing its targets for retiring older units. Even so, coal consumption in the power sector fell 3.4% in the first half. Experts are now calling for a clear plan to phase out coal.
