The EU Commission is adding pressure on Hungary in the rule of law conflict by threatening Prime Minister Orbán with withholding billions in EU funds. Experts agree that the sanctions would hit Budapest hard.

In its third Rule of Law Report, the EU Commission again rebukes Hungary and Poland. Germany could also do more, for example, in the area of lobby transparency. However, the Brussels authority does not always live up to its own high standards. The European Parliament is now calling for consequences.

Anna Lührmann: "No discounts on the rule of law"

With an eye on Poland and Hungary, the Minister of State for Europe and Climate at the German Foreign Office warns against compromising on EU principles because of the conflict with Russia. After weeks of blocking the oil embargo, Lührmann is now calling for a serious debate on the unanimity principle. Many member states are open to this, she says in an interview with Till Hoppe.
