IRENE VELEZ TORRES, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia speaks on panel during the launch of the Belem Declaration at COP30 in Belem, Brazil, on Friday. Coordinated by Colombia and the Netherlands and formally titled the Belem Declaration on the Just Transition Away from Fossil Fuels, it was released in response to the COP30 Mutirao draft, the main political decision text of the summit, which omitted fossil fuel transition commitments. The Declaration has been endorsed by 24 countries, while more than 80 oppose including such language, underscoring deep divisions among negotiators.

TAFF conference: Focus on concrete solutions

In April, the first conference on phasing out fossil fuels will be held in Santa Marta on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The focus will be on practical implementation rather than further negotiations. Between 40 and 80 countries are expected to take part.

TAFF: IRENA offers concept for fossil fuel phase-out at COP31

At the upcoming COP31 climate conference, IRENA wants to present a concrete roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels. The proposal, which is based on cooperation with the Turkish and Australian COP31 presidencies, is intended to support the implementation of the climate targets.

The aftermath of COP30: An inconvenient truth

The conference in Belém showed that COPs bring little return for maximum effort. This is because the dynamics of the climate crisis are now being driven by the economy, the courts and disasters. To remain relevant, climate policy must become more political again.
