Yesterday, Lara Wolters (S D) published her report on corporate due diligence. As expected, the text is significantly stricter than the proposal presented by the Commission in February. This means Wolters is in for some difficult negotiations: Discussions in the Council are going in the opposite direction.

The emergency instrument (SMEI) enables the Commission to profound interventions in the single market in the event of a crisis. Member states could be prevented from doing border closures solitarily, and companies could be forced to manufacture strategically important products. Resistance against this is stirring.
