European Order of Merit: Some surprising recipients

Ahead of the first presentation of the newly created award, some of the nominations apparently caused some consternation among certain heads of state and government. Angela Merkel was nominated by an SPD politician, Belgium nominated a Pole, and the Greek prime minister is said to have advocated for a basketball star.
