India: New import tariffs aimed at protecting the steel industry
New Delhi is introducing safeguard tariffs of up to 12 percent on certain steel imports for a period of three years. The government aims to shield domestic producers from cheap steel – primarily from China – and respond to a sharp rise in imports.
