Power storage – an important component of the energy transition

On the road to a greener electricity mix, power security is also an important matter for China. Just last fall, power shortages even crippled factories in some provinces. A massive expansion of power storage facilities is supposed to ensure that something like that doesn't happen again - but there are difficulties with financing.

Gas storage facilities: Commission wants to allow subsidies

In the fight against high gas prices, the EU Commission is backing a subsidy and demand strategy. Member states and operators are to be obliged to achieve a minimum gas storage level by September 30 of each year. However, in the draft communication on energy prices, the authority also points the way to financial incentives. States are also to double biogas production by 2030.

EU-Africa summit as an opportunity for the energy transition

The EU-Africa summit is intended to give new impetus to the partnership between the two continents. A broad range of topics also includes possible cooperation in the field of renewable energies. For example, Europe wants to promote the expansion of infrastructure with know-how and an investment offensive and, in return, import green hydrogen in particular. Observers warn not to lose sight of the population in the process.

Claude Turmes: "without LNG ports, we would be completely vulnerable to blackmail"

For Luxembourg's energy minister, the only way out of the current gas price crisis is a package of measures: increasing energy efficiency, expanding renewable energies and diversifying gas sources. He does not see any risk that the current crisis situation will push the climate issue into the background. Demand for gas will continue to fall, says Turmes in the interview.

China's hidebound power sector hinders energy transition

China's power sector has gained much attention since last year. On the one hand, the People's Republic launched its emissions trading scheme in the summer, which so far has only covered the power sector. At the same time, the country was hit by a severe power crisis. Many of the causes lie in the sector's outdated structure, which is also hampering China's planned energy transition.

Renewable energies in China

Renewable energies are an integral part of China's policy. The current, 14th Five-Year Plan primarily promotes the technological areas of energy and materials and focuses on the development of alternative energy sources. In contrast to the previous five-year plan, the focus is no longer on achieving global technological leadership in renewable energy technologies, but rather on expanding the infrastructure and strengthening the economic and secure energy supply. In the 14th Five-Year Plan, the Chinese Ministry of Energy (NEA) has given concrete figures for renewable energy. Thus, the total installed capacity of wind power and solar is to reach 1200 GW by 2030. As early as 2020, China's energy system experienced record renewable energy growth despite the coronavirus crisis. By 2025, the final 16.5 percent should be reached.      From Production & Development to China's Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality to Coal Turnaround - China Renewable Energy News from the Table.Media Editorial Team!
