Liquid methane, also known as liquefied natural gas (LNG), is an environmentally friendly fuel obtained by cooling methane gas to extremely low temperatures. It is used as a clean alternative to fossil fuels such as coal and oil and plays an important role in the global energy supply. However, despite its benefits, the use of liquid methane also poses challenges, particularly in relation to methane emissions and the extraction of methane hydrates. Methane is a gas that occurs naturally in the atmosphere and is a potent greenhouse gas. It is produced by biological processes in wetlands, livestock farming and fossil fuels. At -162°C, the gas liquefies, taking up only one six-hundredth of its original volume, making transportation and storage more efficient. This technological feat has made it possible to transport liquid methane globally and use it as a clean energy source. Liquid methane (LNG) is mainly transported by ship or special tankers. Before transportation, the methane is cooled down to very low temperatures in order to convert it into a liquid state and reduce its volume. This enables efficient transportation over long distances. Careful safety precautions and monitoring are essential to avoid possible leaks or accidents and to minimize the environmental impact. Advantages of liquid methane One of the main advantages of liquid methane is its role as an environmentally friendly fuel. It is widely known that fossil fuels such as coal and oil produce significant CO₂ emissions that drive climate change. In comparison, methane produces less CO₂ during combustion and also produces fewer pollutants such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. As a result, liquid methane is increasingly being used as a clean alternative for energy generation in power plants and industrial facilities. Global trade in liquid methane has increased significantly in recent years. Countries with rich gas resources are exporting LNG to regions that need a reliable energy supply. Major exporters such as Qatar, the USA and Australia are actively supplying countries in Asia and Europe. Trade in liquid methane has promoted economic cooperation between nations and played an important role in diversifying energy sources. Disadvantages of liquid methane In addition to its positive aspects, liquid methane also has disadvantages. With regard to the future prospects of liquid methane, the focus is on sustainable use. New technologies such as methane pyrolysis, in which methane is converted into hydrogen and solid carbon, could further advance the climate-friendly use of methane. The promotion of renewable energies and the development of storage technologies are also crucial to reducing overall dependence on fossil fuels.
