EU Green Deal definition and summary The EU Green Deal is defined as a package of measures to help EU Member States accelerate their transformation towards a climate-neutral future. It is therefore an important EU climate policy project. The concept was presented by the European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen in 2019. It was created to determine what steps need to be taken to achieve the 2030 climate target and ultimately the continent's climate neutrality. The path to this goal is to lead through a transformation to a modern, sustainable and competitive economy. One of the measures is the adjustment of the 2030 climate target: if greenhouse gas emissions were initially to be reduced by 40%, the target was raised to 55% compared to 1990. In addition to the EU's seven-year budget, funds are also available under the Next Generation EU recovery plan to support this. One third of the funds earmarked there will flow into Green Deal financing with funds from the EU budget. In total, this amounts to around EUR 1.8 trillion. EU Green Deal objectives and measures Impact of the EU Green Deal on Germany The EU Green Deal also has a concrete impact on German companies. They have less time to adjust to the reduced amount of emission allowances. If we look at coal production and therefore energy generation, this development may ultimately also have an impact on consumers. The EU has developed approaches for a just transition, such as a Just Transition Fund. This is intended to support regions that are economically heavily dependent on coal, for example, during the transition. Parts of Germany are affected by this, but other countries are also facing similar challenges. Primarily those countries that rely economically on sectors that have a negative impact on the environment are facing major changes as a result of the Green Deal. Financing is intended to help with a just transition. All the news on the EU Green Deal is available from the Table Media editorial team.
