Governments from Africa and Europe pledge climate protection and simultaneously want to produce more natural gas. At COP in Egypt, this controversial topic is officially excluded. But it will still play an important role. The tug-of-war between supporters and opponents has begun.

We have entered a new era of loss and damage from human-induced climate change. Therefore, finance for loss and damage must be on the agenda of the upcoming COP27 – or the climate summit will have failed before it officially starts. The Global Shield being co-developed between the G7 and V20 can certainly offer help, but it is not enough. We need a more comprehensive Finance Facility for loss and damage to be established at this COP.
