Even though Friedrich Merz recently called for closed borders with neighboring countries, he has Europe firmly in his sights. In order to strengthen the EU economically and in terms of defense, he is more open than his own party in one aspect.

At midday on this historic day, Friedrich Merz sits on a stage in the auditorium of Berlin's Hertie School to talk about Europe. For 90 minutes, he discusses with Italy's former Prime Minister Enrico Letta how the EU can become more competitive.
