December 13, 2022, Livermore, California, USA: The target chamber at Lawrence Livermore National Ignition Facility, where 192 laser beams delivered more than 2 million joules of ultraviolet energy to a tiny fuel pellet to create fusion ignition on December 5, 2022. Scientists and officials with the Department of Energy on Tuesday announced a breakthrough in the creation of fusion energy at the ratory. A team at Lawrence Livermore National Ignition Facility NIF conducted the first controlled fusion experiment in history to reach this milestone, also known as scientific energy breakeven, which means it produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it, according to a news release.
