Vatican/China: Are direct diplomatic relations on the horizon?

Relations between Beijing and the Vatican have historically been challenging. To this day, there are no regular diplomatic relations between the leadership of the Catholic Church and the People's Republic of China. However, a rapprochement may be imminent, much to Taiwan's dismay.
