Tsai wants to strengthen the alliance with the US

With trips to America and China, Taiwan's incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen and former President Ma Ying-jeou are sounding out their parties' foreign policy positions ahead of the presidential elections in January 2024. Above all, Tsai's trip to America holds much more explosive power due to a possible meeting with Kevin McCarthy, the new speaker of the US House of Representatives.
