EU discusses ways toward a common China policy

The EU is continuing to look for a united approach to dealing with the People's Republic. This became clear during a general debate on China policy in the European Parliament. MEPs criticized EU Commission President von der Leyen's visit with French President Macron. Macron's behavior in particular did not go down well in Strasbourg.

Localization pressure on foreign companies

Over decades, China has built a highly sophisticated toolbox of industrial policy instruments to steer economic activities and incentivize companies to act in accordance to political guidelines and objectives. One of the functions of this toolbox is to shape the role of foreign companies in the Chinese market, especially by setting localization expectations and requirements. The intensity of localization pressure depends on product type, industry and competition. ​
