Exercises and threats: Why China reacts so severely to Lai

After President Lai Ching-te took office, China began large-scale military exercises yesterday to simulate a blockade and put the "independence forces" on the island in their place. Moreover, conflicts in the opposition-controlled parliament overshadowed Lai's inauguration. Further protests are planned for Friday.
