Gender ratio of the Commission: Ten female applicants

Ursula von der Leyen is struggling with the member states to increase the number of female candidates for the next Commission. She wants to achieve gender parity. Initially, there were only four female candidates from 25 member states.

Two more women nominated as EU Commissioners

Belgium nominates Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib for the new Commission. Romania is also sending a female candidate to Brussels – although Bucharest had initially favored a man.

New commission: only seven women nominated

The last nominations are out: Italy nominates Raffaele Fitto, Bulgaria Ekaterina Zakharieva and Julian Popov. Belgium, on the other hand, missed the deadline. This means that von der Leyen will not be able to appoint an equal number of men and women to any commission.
