What is Xiaomi?
Xiaomi (小米) is a manufacturer of electronics from China and belongs to the three largest smartphone manufacturers worldwide. The company was founded in 2010 by entrepreneur Lei Jun. In addition to phones and notebooks, Xiaomi produces diverse other electronic items such as watches, vacuuming robots or scooters.
Furthermore, Xiaomi announced plans to enter the car industry with electric vehicles in 2021. In the end of 2021, Xiaomi founded its subsidiary company Xiaomi EV Corp Inc for its plans to succeed. Xiaomi also supports research in autonomous driving.
Xiaomi on blacklist: Why is Xiaomi facing criticism?
Xiaomi was blacklisted in the USA under the administration of former president Donald Trump. The company was said to have strong ties to the Chinese military. Although Xiaomi took legal action against the decision and was subsequently removed from the U.S. blacklist, further criticism followed.
In the fall of 2021, Lithuania accused Xiaomi of a lack of safety-related issues and called to the public not to purchase any Xiaomi phones. The Lithuanian government stated that data protection was not guaranteed on the Chinese manufacturer’s devices. In addition, censorship features, that could be activated remotely, had supposedly been discovered in the phones’ 5G systems,
The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) could not confirm Lithuania’s safety-related allegations against Xiaomi.
