Is China's booming art market meeting a political demise?

In China, art fairs such as the recent one in Shanghai are once again attracting visitors, although due to Covid restrictions they come almost exclusively from within the country. For years, artworks by renowned foreign artists were considered a safe investment by Chinese collectors. But more and more young collectors are now turning to domestic art – and political developments are causing concern in the industry.

The rush was big: More than 400 galleries had applied to participate in the Shanghai art fair Art021. Only about a quarter of applicants were accepted, as David Chau, one of the co-founders of the art fair launched in 2012, explains. Art021 focuses on contemporary art. Foreign exhibitors, some of whom were unable to attend in person due to China's strict travel regulations, were represented by their Chinese offshoots.

"Don't take any drugs," Chen Tianzhuo urges his 12-member troupe shortly before the big show. But stimulants would certainly be helpful tonight: the "Asian Dope Boys," as Chen's art collective is called, want to dance, sing, scream, roll around in mud they've scraped together themselves, and perform tribal rituals they've invented themselves for a whole twelve hours at the Berlin techno club "Traumabar" until they, and the audience, enter an out-of-body state.
