The afterlife of EV batteries

China is one of the largest markets for electric vehicles. While sales of new vehicles are booming, the recycling of batteries in the People's Republic is still underdeveloped. Many batteries disappear into illegal channels, important raw materials are lost. Experts see a discrepancy between regulations and reality. Green e-mobility has a sustainability problem.

The boom in electric mobility in recent years will soon result in millions of used EV batteries. The car industry quantifies the service life of batteries to be eight to ten years. After that, the capacity of the storage modules and thus the range of the vehicles will have decreased to such an extent that the batteries will need to be replaced.
