Saving the climate: methane shifts into focus

Idyllic to look at, but frighteningly harmful to the climate: wet rice cultivation
China is unable to deal with its methane emissions. The country's coal sector in particular emits enormous amounts of this gas, which is even more harmful to the climate than CO2. Politicians currently have other priorities than tackling this problem. Yet, by managing the gas more efficiently, plants could even use it as an additional source of energy.

In a recent International Energy Agency (IEA) report, China has ascended to a regrettable 1st place among greenhouse gas emitters. But it's not the usual suspect, carbon dioxide, that's at issue here. It's the gas methane, whose emission is also changing the climate. The IEA has become alarmed by the trend. And it leaves China with new problems if it wants to meet its targets.
