What is the United Nations?
The United Nations, also known as the United Nations Organization (UNO/ UN), is an intergovernmental association of 193 states. The UNs’ most important tasks are to ensure world peace, uphold international law and respect human rights.
The United Nations was founded in 1945. Its headquarters are in New York City. The current Secretary-General of the UN is the Portuguese politician António Guterres.
Is China part of the United Nations?
China is a member of the United Nations and a permanent member of the UN Security Council. In 1945, the Republic of China was a founding member of the UN.
Today, the People’s Republic faces serious allegations of human rights violations, especially in the regions of Xinjiang and Tibet. For several years, then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet had been demanding access to the province of Xinjiang to conduct an independent investigation about human rights violations against the Uyghurs, a Muslim minority.
Until 2022, China had repeatedly rejected visits of the High Commissioner. China on the one hand justified the denial with the ongoing corona pandemic, but also accused the Human Rights Council of the UN that investigations were aimed at harming China.
In May 2022, however, Michele Bachelet visited China including the province of Xinjiang. The UN report on the human rights situation in Xinjiang was published in August 2022, after it had been postponed for over a year.
