David Ownby: in search of the Chinese world order

The Reading the China Dream project translates the texts of contemporary Chinese thinkers into English.
China’s intellectuals are surprisingly lively in their discussions of philosophy and society – but unfortunately, little of this ever leaves the People’s Republic. Instead, the focus is on the slogans of the propaganda media. The blog “Reading the China Dream” by Canadian David Ownby shows: Many thinkers are looking for more contemporary solutions to the country’s needs.

Foreign countries perceive social debates in China primarily through the state media’s synchronized propaganda. It may therefore come as a surprise to many that there is also a lively culture of discourse in China. It eludes state constraints and tries to find philosophical solutions for Chinese issues beyond Marx and Mao.
